Radiohead, “Just” guitar lesson. Today we’re using a duo of pedals, the Pigtronix Philosopher’s Rock compressor and the JHS Angry Charlie Distortion to achieve the clean and dirty tones heard from Jonny Greenwood. The intro blasts open with escalating octaves that build tension with the C diminished scale. Then, it’s off to a clean but thick neck pickup tone using the optical circuit in the Pigtronix Philosopher’s Rock. The verse includes some tasty licks, simply formed off the G string of a major chord and ends with 2 slow arpeggios as the rhythm travels down incrementally from Am to F. Using just a fraction of gain from the Angry Charlie gives the chorus those powerful chords with clear note separation while the Philosopher’s Rock takes care of the seemingly endless sustain. Enjoy your daily guitar lesson.
