Here’s “an oldie but a goodie” when comes time for jazz guitar comping chops on the Bb blues. This is somewhat of an alternative approach since we’re focusing first on building a decent melody line.

The steps:
-1-
Build a simple and strong melody line on the Bb blues
-2-
Add easy, Bb blues barre chords (those are pretty boring in the jazz guitar sense)
-3-
Add Bb blues jazz guitar chords that are rootless, and with nice 9th and 13th extensions. The melody is still on top
-4-
Ornament the melody from step 1 with one-note pickup, and keep the same jazz chords as in step 3.
-5-
Finally, ornament all the nice jazz guitar chords, with added chromatic chords for your jazz guitar comping.
Result?
A great-sounding, easy to play Bb blues comping that sounds and smells jazz guitar from miles away.
Enjoy!
