Here’s a third move to join with the first two phrases in this set and complete the cycle. This time the focus is on using “broken octaves” in combination with blues, first descending through the minor pentatonic scale, then ascending with the traditional, six-tone blues scale. Octaves were first popularized by jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery, who passed the torch down to his younger disciples, like Burrell, George Benson, and a host of other fine jazz and blues guitar players.
