The lesson begins with three easy chord shapes: E A B7. I give you some switching tips and tricks to make the chord switching smoother and easier and then we practice the switching, playing downstrokes only and playing through the song.
Folsom Prison Blues uses an incredibly iconic and famous strumming pattern where we alternate between bass notes as we strum, creating a boom chuck style, country folk sound. We practice the pattern over each chord shape and then we put it together with our chord progression.

The intro riff a few easy to remember notes, as they’re based on B7. We go over it and we also work on the counting so that we can play it and then work our way into the song properly without any awkward pauses. Then we play the outro riff which is the same thing but, once again, we have to figure out the timing and play it at the exact correct moment!

Finally I demonstrate the guitar solo with TAB so you can see how it goes and then I offer some basic tips and some resources that will help you learn this song better.

If you’d like to practice the entire song with me, there’s a full playthrough available on my Patreon page, where I play through the entire song, start to finish. More information on that here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/64271219/
