This week’s lesson is on “Solsbury Hill” by Peter Gabriel. This is one of those songs that you hear on the radio and don’t even realize is in an odd time signature because it flows so smoothly. It’s in 7/4 (with the exception of the 2 bars in 4/4 at the end of the B section), and part of what makes it so beautiful is the use of pedaled bass notes throughout that are heard first in the guitar part in the intro, and then in the bass guitar once it joins in at the first interlude (as heard on the original recording).
NOTE: At 1:23, I explain that you assign your thumb to the lowest 3 strings and the rest of your picking fingers to the higher strings, but a more accurate way to describe the technique would be that you assign your thumb to the alternating bass line, and then use your remaining digits on the strings above those notes. The ring finger is only used for the 4-note chords at the end of the B-section. Thanks to the individuals that caught that!
