In this lesson, I’m going to show you all how to play “Sunday Morning” by Maroon 5. This song is a 3-chord wonder, meaning it’s the same 3 chords, played in the same order, over and over! To add some challenge to it, I’ve also included the Sir-Duke-esque melody that they play after the 2nd chorus.

The lesson begins with our chord shapes: Dm7, G and Cmaj7. We can also play the more vanilla: Dm, G and C chords, but I recommend giving their jazzier counterparts a try first. I show you some tips for switching between the chords before we practice playing them together, in order, using downstrokes only.
Once we’ve successfully accomplished this, we learn the strumming pattern, which is actually one of the more complicated ones, as it begins on an off-beat. This means all our chords are “pushed” forwards. I show you when to switch chords and exactly how to assemble the strumming pattern before we try playing the chords and strumming pattern all together.
Next, we take a look at the lead part. This reminds me a lot of the song “Sir Duke” by Stevie Wonder as everyone plays the same melody line together (I really recommend checking it out if you’re not familiar).
We go through it, note-by-note, and I talk a little about using the proper picking direction (downs and ups) for the harder parts before we try playing it together.
