In this Adventure Of A Lifetime guitar lesson video, I will demonstrate how to play all the chords and cool guitar licks found in this catchy hit by Coldplay, note-for-note.
First off, you will need to have a standard tuned guitar with a capo at the 12th fret in order to play all the parts like they were recorded on the original recording.
The entire song is dominated by a repeated guitar lick played by guitarist Jonny Buckland throughout the intro and all of the chorus sections.
This guitar lick can be a bit challenging for the intermediate or beginner level guitarist. It requires some quick quick legato work using fretted pulling off to the capo. Besides that, it goes by at a speed that you will probably need to work up to.
The great thing is that after you learn the notes the first time through, they are always repeated like that note-for-note except for the top note that changes every two times. The lick then ends with a quick shift up to the 19th fret which can also be quite challenging to nail accurately.
Because of all these techniques and the fact that the lick is consistently repeated, it makes for an excellent technique exercise. In fact, guitarist Jonny Buckland originally wrote it as just an exercise for himself, but other members of the band thought it would make a great hook for a song so “Adventure Of A Lifetime” was born.
During the verse there is a tight little funky guitar riff based around chords that occur high up on the fretboard. The rhythmic feel is the most important element here although the notes are very melodic as well and compliment the vocals very well.
At the very end of the song there is a simple yet very effective guitar solo. This solo is also a repeated melodic phrase but in this case, it probably won’t be very difficult to play.
All of these guitar chords and licks found in this Adventure Of A Lifetime guitar lesson occur above the 12 fret of course because of the capo, which is pretty unique for a pop song. I hope you enjoy this one because it is has some very cool guitar licks in it. Enjoy! 🙂
