Written by Jackson Browne and Glenn Frey, “Take It Easy” is one of the most beloved songs that the Eagles ever created. It was also the band’s very first single, released in 1972 on their debut album.
As with many songs recorded by the Eagles, “Take It Easy” contains many different guitar layers throughout.
What I have decided to do with this lesson series is show you basically what the main chords and chord progressions are for the acoustic guitar part. This acoustic part is the true harmonic foundation for the song, so it makes sense to me to focus on it. Playing the song in this way sounds great with just one guitar player.
In the first video lesson we will begin our study of how to play Take It Easy by looking and the chords used throughout.
Most of the chords are quite basic and don’t require anything above a basic beginner level to perform well. There are some interesting chord voicing in there though, probably a few you have never played before.
I will demonstrate all of the variations used in the chord progressions throughout the song to make sure you can play along with the album with not a lot of guesswork.
In the second video lesson I will teach you note-for-note how to play the guitar solo. And what a guitar solo it is!
This guitar solo is very country influenced with lots of fluid double-stops and slick licks. You will also have to contend with a lot of bends as well.
The guitar solo is definitely beyond the beginner level. In fact, I think you should probably be at an upper intermediate level before attempting to learn it.
Just take your time and learn it phrase by phrase like I teach it in the video lesson. The notes and phrases fly by at quite a quick tempo so it may take a little bit of time to get your head around it.
Ok that is about it for all of my rambling. Enjoy learning this great song. 🙂
