I had the same experience until the K&K pure mini came into my life. This pickup is a bridge plate transducer and one that I would consider if you are looking for great tone and an easy to manage acoustic guitar pickup.
The tone produced by this pickup is quite natural and overall transparent. The K&K Pure Mini is a passive pickup so be aware that you will need to pair it with a DI to boost the signal, plus it will give you tone shaping controls which are always nice to have.
I have this pickup in my Martin HD35 clear across to my 1935 Martin 0-17 and it works fantastic in both the larger bodied instruments all the way to the smaller ones.
