George Benson is one of the most accomplished Jazz Guitar Players ever to pick up the instrument. He’s recorded endless solo albums and has played on more hit songs then anyone could name.
In this Lesson based on an article written by Gianluca Corona in the March 2013 issue of Guitar Techniques Magazine … we again take a look at one of several great Licks that really captures part of what makes George Benson the unique guitar player that he is.
If you are not familiar with Guitar Techniques Magazine … definitely check them out thru amazon or at your local magazine stand … it is an amazing magazine that never fails to inspire every month.
In this George Benson article Gianluca does a fantastic job of showing 20 Licks that show almost all of the Techniques that really define George’s playing. From Double Stops to Chromatic Licks to Chord Stabs to his terrifying yet smooth use of Octaves … it’s all thoroughly examined in this article.
Here we BreakDown one of the 7 Licks in total that we will do Lessons on in our series of George Benson Jazz Quick Licks. This second Lick is a great example of how he seamlessly combines a Jazz feel with some great Blues Double Stop Licks. And then he plays a blisteringly fast Pentatonic run where he incorporates some great Jazz type Chromatic notes.
There are a lot of great Jazz Guitar Players out there that combine both Blues Phrases with Jazz Licks … from Larry Carlton, Robben Ford, Joe Pass, Pat Metheny, Wes Montgomery, Jim Hall, Pat Martino, Joe diorio, Barney Kessel, Ted Green, Howard Roberts, Norman Brown, Emily Remier, Tal Farlow, Herb Ellis, Lenny Breau, Django Reinhardt … and on and on and on …
Included in the top of that list is definitely George Benson.
Check out George Benson’s website …
